Cloverfield Review (some spoilers)

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Well I guess it would be most appropriate that my first post is on a JJ Abram’s creation, Cloverfield.  Being a LOST junkie, I figured this was going to be a good ride.

It is entirely based in Manhattan, New York.  Apparently New York is the target for many mass destructions eh (Godzilla, Armageddon , The Day After Tomorrow [Blu-ray]…it goes on and on).  It opens slowly enough with a erratic home camera ala “The Blair Witch Project.”  For the first 20 minutes you learn about the cast of characters you will follow through this roller coaster.  Someone got a promotion and his friends are sending him off to Japan.  Later that evening, a huge explosion rocks Manhattan and all heck breaks loose.  After the initial explosion the Statue of Liberty head is promptly decapitated and dropped right outside the building of our party.  The story goes on with snippets of the monster  (oops, yes, it’s a monster, sorry if I ruined it, but I did say ’spoilers’ didn’t I?), interactions with the military, and the fate of our heroes and heroines.  And yes, there’s a love story intertwined in all this too.

Scores outta 10 (10 being strong, 1 being weak)

  • Fear factor: 2.  Maybe one scene where you’ll jump.
  • Thrill factor:  7.  Not bad, but I was somewhat happy that it finally ended.  But that could be due to the:
  • Dizzyness factor:  11.  This was worse than Blair Witch.  Be prepared and bring Dramamine.  Seriously.  I left with a bad headache.
  • Plot factor:  5.  Characters were a bit blaze, nothing you can really latch onto.  Versus say “Hugo” from LOST…

Overall:  6 outta 10.  A bit overhyped for my tastes and I was really hoping for more out of this.  Your thoughts?
